Using a Driveway ContractorTips

One part of a home or business that is difficult to work on for even the best do-it-yourselfers is a driveway. The equipment needed, intense labour, and materials usually require a home owner to hire a driveway contractor to complete any type of work. Driveway contractors can be found in every community and can help complete projects from simple crack sealing to complete removal and replacement.

Types of Projects Contractors Perform

There are many different types of driveways. Asphalt, concrete, resin, gravel, and block paving drives are the most common. Most contractors will work on any type, but some specialise in just one or two. The typical services that a good contractor will perform include: crack sealing, fixing failures, removal of existing pavement, and installation of new driveways. The price and time required for each project will vary greatly on the size of the project, the time of year, and the overall contractor work load. It is a good idea to plan for at least a two week lag before the contractor will be on site once they are hired.

Method to Select a High Quality Contractor

Once a home owner has decided to hire a contractor to repair or install a driveway, the selection process begins. Most communities will have several contractors that perform this type of work and picking the right one can seem daunting. The best way to get started on the process is to ask friends and neighbours about contractors they have used in the past. They do not have a vested interest in the contractor and will give an honest opinion. Each contractor should then be contacted from the list generated from friends. When discussing the project with the contractor, a few important pieces of information should be gathered. These include:• Experience – Each contractor should provide a list of similar jobs they have completed.• Adequate Staffing – Each contractor should demonstrate that they have enough workers to complete the job in a timely manner.• Warranty – Most importantly, the contractor should stand behind their work. A contractor should not be selected if they are unwilling to provide a warranty.

Supervision During Construction

Most driveway projects will not take more than a few days time to complete. It is critical that the owner thoroughly understand each step of construction and be present several times each day to ensure that the construction is being performed to the standards agreed to and that the proper amount of material is being used. It is difficult to see what has occurred during the day if the job is reviewed just once a day in the evening.

Repairing or installing a driveway can seem like an overwhelming task, but it can be a straightforward and enjoyable experience if the right contractor is selected and their work is closely supervised.
